SPE Lagos Holds Career Talk for Secondary Schools
May, 2009 – As part of efforts to improve the quality of education in the country, the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Lagos Chapter 61 partnered with Chevron Nigeria Limited to sponsor the annual SPE Career Talk for Secondary schools (High School) in Lagos. The event which took place on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 at Protea Hotel Lekki, provided SPE the opportunity to expand the personal, intellectual and professional horizons of the students by teaching them about the oil industry, its strategic role in the nation’s economy, development of the industry and the invaluable parts the students could play within it.
A total of 120 secondary school students from various schools including Igbobi College, Yaba; Methodist Boys High School; CMS Grammar School; Emdee College; Baptist Academy; Command Secondary School, Ipaja; Lagos Preparatory School, Ikoyi Methodist Girls High School; Reegan Memorial Baptist Girls High School and Kings College participated in the Career Talk.
Mr. George Kalu, SPE section 61 Chairman highlighted the organization’s commitment to improving the quality of education in the country. He said that the oil and gas industry can only recruit the very best and therefore urged the students to be diligent in their studies.
Prisca Kanebi, SPE’s publicity secretary and Adedoja Ojelabi, Earth Science Immersion Coordinator of Chevron Nigeria Linited were on hand to deliver captivating lectures to the students on “Oil and gas 101 Overview” and “Careers in the Oil Industry: An Earth Scientist’s Perspective” to enhance the students’ understanding of the processes and career opportunities in the oil and gas sector.
SPE’s organization of the Career Talk was another demonstration of its commitment to young people and their personal, academic and professional empowerment to ensure that the students realize their full potential as future leaders in industry and the nation as a whole.
