SPE Delta Sponsors Materials/Corrosion Teachers Camp
October, 2009 – SPE Delta and six other local societies joined together to promote the Materials/Corrosion Science Teachers Camp, which was held at UNO during the summer.
The camp was free to High School Science teachers interested in developing knowledge about Materials and Corrosion Engineering. The local Section of NACE International, the Corrosion Society, approved funding to sponsor the camp, which was held June 22-29, 2009. Dr. Hui of UNO also helped coordinate the camp.
The program is a week-long, hands-on, lab-based camp which shows how to use applied sciences and engineering techniques in the classroom. Materials Science excites students’ interest because the student has every day, hands-on experience with materials. Thus, materials topics are great motivators in any engineering, technology or science course.
This year, 24 high school teachers devoted one week of their summer vacation to attend this camp. Teachers learned new subject matter, new experiments, and new teaching concepts. They worked with metals, ceramics, polymers and composites, and developed an appreciation for the importance of these materials to modern life. And thanks to SPE volunteers, they also learned more about the petroleum industry and its many opportunities.
SPE was instrumental in assuring each teacher received a $500 gift certificates to aide them in purchasing supplies so they could share their new knowledge in their classrooms this fall. At their commencement, each teacher spoke about their week at the camp. EVERYONE had nothing but accolades on how well the camp was run, how great the teachers were, how much they learned, not only about science but also about teaching. They were all excited about bring ing their new knowledge back to their students. They were very appreciative of the presenters and of the societies for their gifts.
THEY WERE OUTSTANDING!!!!
