Am I a Future Engineer?

Take a look at your skills. Do you have the traits of an engineer? We don’t mean just being good at math and science. Many of the best engineers are great communicators who also think creatively.  If you are:

What is an Engineer?

Engineers change the world. They develop creative, practical solutions that make a difference in our everyday lives. Engineers work with other smart, inspiring people to invent, design and create things that matter. A love for math and science is not necessary to be an engineer; you just need to be able to do it.

What Can I Do Now to Become an Engineer?

In countries with college preparatory curricula in secondary schools, a science-engineering program emphasizing math, chemistry and physics provides the necessary background for engineering careers. Pre-university students who have the option of selecting their courses should follow a similar academic path. Language, composition, economics, and history courses needed for improving communication and management skills are also highly recommended.

Prepare for success at the university by taking these recommended courses before you go:

  • Math (four years): Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus
  • Science (four years): Physics, Chemistry, Ecology, Astronomy, Biology, Earth Sciences
  • Language Arts (four years): Language, Speech/Debate, Communications/Media, Journalism
  • Foreign Language (three years): Your choice, based on what your school offers. Make sure you are well-versed in English if it is not your first language.
  • Take engineering courses if they are available at your school.

Other Tips

  • Participate in after-school programs, workshops, contests or special events that are engineering related.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities. These skills are valuable for future studies and in careers.
  • Seek an internship or part-time/summer jobs at engineering schools or companies.
